Dear Friend,

As another year comes to a close, we at The Pathway Initiative (TPI) are deeply grateful for our wonderful community of students, teachers, mentors, advisors, and donors. Despite a challenging year, your partnership opened doors for dozens of underrepresented young people across Greater Boston, who had meaningful opportunities to explore STEM pathways and pursue their dreams in medicine and the life sciences. We are so proud of our students for their dedication, commitment, and perseverance.

Please enjoy some highlights from our year below, and thank you for being a valued member of the TPI community. Your support means the world to me and our students—and it directly impacts the future health of communities of color, in Massachusetts and around the country.

With thanks,

Lawrence B. Mensah, DPhil., Ph.D.

Student Highlight: Tavia

Tavia Augustin, a Haitian-American high school senior from Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood, has always wanted to help people. Reinforced by an internship through TPI, Tavia has her sights set on a medical career, and a future as a nurse practitioner.

TPI has an amazing mission that the medical field should reflect the diverse world we’re living in. This program has given students like me the opportunity to explore their passions and see if the field is right for them,” she says.

Hyanny Santos

This summer, high school students like Hyanny (pictured above) learned about STEM topics through dedicated modules, while also taking part in skill-building activities focused on workplace readiness and communication. Each student also worked on an independent research project, such as Hyanny’s presentation on non-alcoholism causes of liver cancer.

They worked diligently to review academic sources, published studies, and research papers to pull together their research,” said Claudia Wolff, program coordinator. “They gave outstanding presentations!”
