Our Mission

We aim to increase access for talented and motivated African American, Hispanic, and Latino students, to help them achieve their career potential in medicine and support their return to medically underserved communities, helping to mitigate the shortage of clinicians of color in the United States.

Our Mission

What Makes Us Unique?

The Pathway Initiative is not only dedicated to supporting our students every step of the way, from high school all the way through medical residency, but is also designed as a positive feedback loop. Students can apply and be selected at any of the three main entry points: (1) High School, (2) College, and (3) Medical School.

When students complete our programs through residency, they provide feedback and support for those behind them.

This longitudinal, cross-generational, and end-to-end wrap-around program builds a community of dedicated and passionate individuals who support each other while getting support from seasoned professionals at the same time.

Our Story

The Pathway Initiative Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit,  community-based public education organization located in Boston, Massachusetts. The founder, Dr. Lawrence B. Mensah, was inspired to start The Pathway Initiative following his own long and lonely educational journey, which lacked support until getting connected with a mentor.

Given his own humble beginnings from a small town in Ghana, Dr. Mensah strongly believes that no child’s future should be shackled by their socio-economic background, Every child has talent and potential, and with the right support can contribute meaningfully to society.

We believe that with access and opportunity, determined and ambitious individuals can achieve fulfilling careers in medicine. We invite you to join us in this critical work. Become one of our partners and help us make healthcare more equitable by improving opportunities for underrepresented students of color pursuing a medical education.

Our Vision

We strive to support African American, Hispanic, and Latino students on their path to medicine while paving a way for them to become transformative leaders and role models in their communities.
