Deadline Extended to Apply for the High School Medical Academy!

Welcome to TPI's October Newsletter

Increasing diversity in medicine and alleviating the shortage of clinicians in underserved communities.

Dear Friend,

As our students settle into a new school year, we at The Pathway Initiative Inc. are excited to introduce our community to our new email newsletter.

Throughout the year, we will use this space to share updates with friends of The Pathway Initiative Inc. on our student successes, partner highlights, staff spotlights, and how you can help us achieve our mission of improving diversity in medical education and, in turn, in clinical care throughout Massachusetts and around the United States.

We hope this newsletter inspires you to support our mission, and we encourage you to share it with your network and community.

If you have ideas for content you’d like to see in future editions, please feel free to email us – we would love to hear from you!

Please enjoy the updates below, and thank you for being a valued member of the TPI community.

Summer Program Highlights

In August, our successful High School Medical Academy and Summer Internship Programs concluded, with 25 HSMA students completing coursework this summer, and 18 high school and college students completing paid internships at Boston Medical Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dedham Center, and Boston University’s Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology.

“The experience I gained this summer has allowed me a clearer idea of what it’s like being in a research setting, and what career paths I may want to pursue in the future,” said Gabby Coleman, a TPI student who interned with Boston Medical Center’s Pathology Department, working in a metastatic breast cancer research lab.

“The students TPI connected us with were mature, open to learning, engaged, and willing to be flexible,” said Dr. Christopher Andry, Chief of Pathology at Boston Medical Center, who hosted Gabby and other students. “We’re mindful of the fact that often people who apply for jobs [at BMC] often come from a position of privilege so offering this opportunity is important.”

Not only did students like Gabby learn valuable science, medical, and soft skills to aid in their future careers, but they also learned the impact of philanthropy by participating in TPI’s first Fuel the Future summer fundraising campaign, along with members of the High School Medical Academy Program. We are so grateful to the students who helped raise funds to expand TPI’s mission. Special thanks go to our top fundraisers, High School Medical Academy students Cristiane Dos Santos, Chinemerem Achebe, and Crystal Walters, who were inspired by their own experiences to help give others the opportunity to join TPI’s programs. Well done!

Upcoming Opportunities for Students

Our school-year internships, for both high school and college students, and our High School Medical Academy start October 21 and run through April 30. Interested students may fill out our interest form online. Are you interested in hosting students at your organization? Email us to learn more about how we can partner.

Recent Funding News

Thank you to Boston Afterschool and Beyond for a recent grant to fund TPI’s work, as well as the City of Boston for funding through its Young Employment Opportunity and Immigrant Advancement Grant. We are very grateful for the continued support from these organizations. We would also like to thank Sarepta Therapeutics, who generously donated 40 laptops this summer for our students to use in TPI programs year-round! If you are interested in helping to support TPI through a grant or corporate donation, please contact us.

Meet the TPI Team

Earlier this year, we welcomed 11 new members to our Board of Directors. All experts in their various fields, the Board brings together unique experience, a passion for TPI’s mission, and a drive to create positive change. This month, we’re meeting Shannon Watterson, a member of the Marketing and Communications Committee and the Fundraising Committee. Learn more about Shannon’s experience and what led her to TPI.

Support Our Work

Did you know $200 is all it takes to fund a STEM tutorial for 2-5 high school students? Every dollar donated makes a difference for our students – and the more we can raise, the more students we can help. Donate to The Pathway Initiative today and help reduce the barriers underrepresented students face in their journey to becoming doctors. Make a one-time or monthly gift online, or contact us for more ways to give, including through stock, donor-advised funds, planned giving, and more.
