What is your educational and professional background?
I am a physician trained in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular diseases, and Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac transplantation. I went to medical school in India and continued my postgraduate studies and academic career in the US. Currently, I serve as Chief of Cardiology at VA Providence Healthcare System and Professor of Medicine at Brown University.
What made you want to get involved with The Pathway Initiative?
I wanted to get involved with TPI because I am passionate about the need for increasing the number of underrepresented minority physicians.
Why is increasing diversity and access in medicine important to you?
This is crucial to reduce inequity in healthcare. Diversity bridges cultural gaps, enhances patient-provider relationships, and thereby improves patient care and outcomes.
How do you see your role on the board contributing to the growth and success of The Pathway Initiative?
I have spoken to high school students as a member of the TPI Board, and look forward to attending more sessions to inspire and advise aspiring physicians. I also plan to help as needed in program development and assisting in grant funding applications.
What advice would you give to a high school or college student pursuing a career in medicine?
Follow your dreams, find good mentors. Being a physician is a great privilege and an opportunity to make a better world.
