Data Scientist at Starfish by EAB

Mr. Scott James is a Data Scientist at Starfish by EAB, where he builds predictive models for student success, develops data visualizations, and analyzes intervention effectiveness for community colleges and university partners. As the son of a public high school teacher, Mr. James has seen the impact quality education can have, and is driven to help more students get the support they need to excel in the classroom and beyond.

In his work at EAB, Mr. James applies his skills as a data scientist and communicator to help institutional leaders interpret findings from quantitative research and use those insights to better support students and close equity gaps in college outcomes. Partnering with university researchers, Mr. James has helped identify successful advising initiatives and tutoring programs and contributed to the literature on online and hybrid course taking.

As an undergraduate Scott worked on a project for the USEPA analyzing patterns in toxic emissions, and as a graduate student led a project for the Baltimore Ravens applying decision models to the NFL draft. Mr. James holds Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics and a master’s degree in advanced Analytics, both from North Carolina State University.

In his free time, Mr. James enjoys playing basketball and table tennis, and is always on the lookout for scenic hikes and running trails (even in the cold New England winters!).
