What is your educational and professional background?

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Global Health with a minor in Biology from the University of Virginia (UVA). During my undergraduate studies, I became deeply interested in understanding the global factors that influence health and access to care, which led me to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the UVA School of Medicine. In my MPH program, I focused on health equity and community health, studying how disparities in healthcare access and outcomes impact underserved populations. I also gained valuable experience through various internships and projects that allowed me to apply my knowledge in real-world settings, including work with nonprofit organizations focused on public health initiatives. My educational background has provided me with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to tackle health inequities at local, national, and global levels, which is why I’m so passionate about working in the public health space.

What made you want to get involved with The Pathway Initiative?

I moved to Boston right after graduating from UVA to join The Pathway Initiative because I was drawn to its mission and the community it serves. I had never been to Boston before, but when I learned about the opportunity to be part of an organization that focuses on increasing diversity in medicine, I knew it was the perfect fit. This work is personal to me. I understand the importance of providing young people from underserved communities with the resources and support they need to pursue careers in medicine. When I was starting out, I didn’t have those same opportunities. Now, I’m passionate about giving students the tools and mentorship I wish I had. It’s not just about helping them—it’s also about fulfilling my own passion for this work. Being part of The Pathway Initiative feels like a chance to make a real difference and to help shape the future of healthcare in a way that’s deeply meaningful to me.

Why is increasing diversity and access in medicine important to you?

Increasing diversity in medicine is important to me because healthcare systems should reflect the diverse communities they serve. Diverse medical teams are better equipped to understand the unique needs of different populations, which leads to better patient care and improved health outcomes. I strongly believe that diversity in medical education and research is essential for advancing personalized medicine. In a world where healthcare is increasingly tailored to individual needs, having a wide range of perspectives is critical. I also believe that creating pathways for underrepresented groups to enter the medical field is vital to ensuring that everyone has access to high-quality care. Diversity should be at the core of every healthcare system because it makes the system stronger, more inclusive, and more effective.

How do you see your role on the board contributing to the growth and success of The Pathway Initiative?

As Program Manager for the High School Medical Academy and Internship Programs, my role allows me to have a direct impact on students as they begin their journey into medicine. I work closely with students to provide them with exposure to the medical field and help them develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed. One of the most important aspects of my work is helping students connect with their personal identity and envision themselves in healthcare roles. I want them to know that a career in medicine is not just a dream, but an achievable goal. By offering mentorship, hands-on experience, and networking opportunities, I help ensure that these students are prepared for the next steps in their education and careers. My goal is to support the growth of the program and help more students find success in their medical careers, ultimately contributing to increasing diversity in the healthcare workforce.

What advice would you give to a high school or college student pursuing a career in medicine?

My advice to students pursuing a career in medicine is to build a strong support system. Surround yourself with mentors, friends, family members, and peers who can offer guidance and encouragement along the way. Medicine is a challenging field, and there will be times when you feel discouraged or unsure. It’s important to remember that success in this field is not about fitting a specific mold—it’s about determination and resilience. Stay focused on your goals and take care of your mental and emotional well-being. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. And remember, you don’t have to do it alone! Find a community that can help you stay motivated and push through the challenges. With the right support, you can overcome obstacles and achieve your goals in medicine!
